For years this has been a question that has had no definitive answer. I do not presume to say I know all that the American Dream entails. I only wish to share the story of my great-grandparents and how it fulfills the American Dream.

My family has lived in the United States of America for a rather long time. Looking back it has been hard to find anything about who came when, or even why they came. My Grandpappy was born near Lebanon, Pennsylvania and my Grammy in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Both have very different stories, but God in his providence led them, preserved them and enabled them to achieve the American Dream.

Born September, 20 1919 on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Raymond William Zweitzig was a lad of blue eyes and blond hair. My Grandpappy was taken from his parents at age six and put into foster care along with his brother Jim. When he would see his Aunt Edith, she would always tell him that she was praying for him and Jim. Within a two year time period Grandpappy and “Uncle” Jim were moved around a total of six times. Eventually they ended up in Ivyland, but the grandmother of the family didn’t like them. They were moved around to other numerous homes in Philadelphia until they were both moved to a farm in Bulltown. Soon after they were both again moved to live with a family in Edgehill. The lady at their new home would not allow them to play or participate in any sports. Grandpappy took his brother and ran away back to the Jones farm near Richboro, Pa. He has said the whole of his childhood he never felt that anyone truly loved him.
Born August, 11 1920 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, Betty Irene Flyscher, my Grammy was bought up in a loving God honoring family. She moved back and forth between Shamokin and Philadelphia during her childhood until her parents finally bought a home in Philadelphia on Oak Lane. Her mother always taught her to take everything, no matter how small to the Lord in prayer.

Ray and Betty, Grandpappy and Grammy met through a mutual friend and began to spend time with each other along with “the gang”, a group of their friends. For the first time in his life, my Grandpappy heard that someone truly loved him, and that it was the Lord, who never leaves us nor forsakes us. They married and although they were never rich, they were never truly wanting. Together they established a stable loving environment where Christ is first. Numerous times I have talked with them and they have told me that they are the richest people alive not because of money or status quo. More important than any of those things they have the Lord as their Savior, as well as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that love them, and love and honor the Lord.

God led, preserved, and provided the American Dream for my Great-Grandparents. Our country was founded on Christ; we are “one nation under God”. It is a life where we are free to honor and worship God. As Christians this is the most important dream we could ever have.

How Can I Please and Honor God in my Life

Hebrews 11:6 states “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” This passage tells us that without faith we cannot please God. If one breaks it down simply, to please God we must show faith. But pleasing God is more than just faith.

James 2:14 says “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?” To please God we must have not only faith but works as well. Faith and works are explicitly intertwined. This is evidenced in

James 2:18 where it says, “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” What might some examples of faith and works combined be though? How exactly do they please God? Our ultimate purpose on earth is to further God’s kingdom, and we can do this by living a life where faith and works are evident. When we witness to people whether through word or deed we please God.

Beyond solely pleasing God it is imperative that we honor him. This leads to the question what exactly is honor? A definition of honor is: to regard or treat with respect; glorify and raise up. When we think of all that Christ had done for us, can we do anything but honor him? In 1 Corinthians 6:20 we read, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”

Christ died for our body and our spirit which were his to begin with. They where his creation and his alone, yet he sent his son to die for everyone. Another important reason to honor God is this “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:17.

Finally in 1 Timothy 1:17 it says “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Let us remember that God is our creator, our savior, the only God and we owe him all honor.

Knowledge

Colossians 1:9-17

9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

When we are a follower of Christ it is important that we have knowledge of God's word. We should immerse ourselves in the word of God. A knowledge of God and his ways can keep a Christian from sin. It is important that we keep a witness. Its impossible to be perfect, there was only one man who was ever perfect and that was my Lord and Saviour, the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, but it is important that as Christians we demonstrate Gods grace and love through our actions.

Other than being a witness, its important to have knowledge of God. Israel, God's covenant nation was was destroyed because, "the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land." (Excerpt from Hosea 4:1)

It is true that God is a merciful God, but we must also realize that he is a just and jealous God. Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." Wow. He gives us the opportunity to seek the knowledge of God, do we take advantage of that. When we get to Heaven will we hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant"? Or will we hear, "Why didn't you seek, and spread the knowledge of me?"

God's Word is the knowledge for all of life and provides direction that is clear and useful for each day. By consulting your Bible and and praying for direction your are gaining knowledge about God that the Holy Spirit can use in your life.

A verse worthy of noting is Proverbs 20:15 "There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel." Let us make sure we seek and spread the knowledge of God everyday.

I Did To Update the About Me :-)

Ok, so some of you have been on my case for not posting constantly. Who can abide it? There is a time coming when the Lord is going to judge the world. Many things have happened throughout the world and people talk about how bad these "disasters" are. The worst disaster you can think of cant even come close to the horror that will be unleashed. This does not mean that God is a the "Big Bad Wolf" sitting up in heaven ready to vaporize everyone to a pile of ashes. God loves us so much that he sent his son to die for us. It is after the fall of man into sin that any destruction came into the world. There is coming a time when God is going to come back and finally destroy and remake the world the way it was origanly intended.

Blessed is the Man That Walketh Not In the Counsel of the Ungodly

Psalm 1 (KJV)

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

I have been meaning to write about Psalm 1 for a while, and then just over this weekend was on a youth group retreat and we had a lesson on it. I figured what better time to write about it then when its fresh on your mind?

So lets break it down verse by verse over the next 6 days, Lord Willing.

Verse 1 talks about walking, standing, and sitting. My uncle, who happens to be my youth leader, challenged us to look at this passage more in depth rather than just reading it and going, Wow what a good passage. Due to some of my hunting "experiences" and analogy came to mind. When you are out in the woods hunting, and you see a deer what is it that you do? Well, first of all your walking to begin with, but then once you see it you stop. You stand, and then slowly you lower yourself into either a sitting or crouching position so that you can keep your gun steady when you aim.

Somehow (must have been through the Holy Spirit working in my heart and mind) I related this analogy to what we were studying. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly. In our "walk" of life we need to make sure that we do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Are we surrounding ourselves with good influences? When we are around people for a while they tend to rub off on us.

Next, comes, "nor standeth in the way of sinners." After walking around the ungodly, can come compromise. Do we stand in the way of sinners? Are we just letting things happen and not making any attempt to witness? To be a good influence to those around us? Or do we just stand to the side and watch things happen?

And Finally for today, comes, "nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful." First we walk around the outside, then we stand around and do nothing. Then comes the point where we just sit down and are a part of the wrong actions around us. Rather than keeping oursleves away from the actions we find ourselves right in the midst doing things that we before we may have thought are not good.

So Blessed is the man that 1) Doesnt walk around looking at the sin and let it influence him. 2) Doesnt stand around with the sinners watching what they are doing, but taking no action against it. 3) Doesnt sit down and be a part of the sinful things that the people around them are doing.

I hope to break down verse 2 tommorow. Until then, remember Philipians 4:6-7 6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Compromise

The Webster’s definition of “compromise” is; a concession to something derogatory. As we look at the world surrounding us, compromise permeates all aspects of our lives. It affects our choices and our relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. It also affects our relationships and interaction with those around us. Many times we make important decisions that will affect us the rest of our lives. Do we compromise in these situations choosing what might be easier for us rather than what the Lord would have for our lives?

One thing that comes to mind is compromise in a relationship between a man and a woman. The Bible in 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” (KJV) Do we engage in a relationship with someone that does not know Christ as their personal savior? According to this passage it tells us not to be “unequally yoked together with the unbelievers”.

Do we make a compromise like so many others do just because we feel someone may be our “soul mate”? Do we compromise in this because someone may be that perfect someone? The Lord is all we need in our lives. In his wisdom and love and his understanding of us, he created the special bond between to people of the opposite sex. Through this bond we may act in ways we never thought we would have any other time. The Lord warns us to seek a God-fearing man or woman to be free from compromise that may ensue through a relationship with an unbeliever.

Solomon was considered the wisest man to ever live, yet he made this mistake. He accepted compromise. Solomon married many women, many of whom were pagans (unbelievers). In order to please them he turned his heart from God and made a compromise with them. He allowed them to keep their practices and their gods. In the end this hardened his heart towards God.

We also compromise through our actions in life around friends. Our human nature is driven by pride and the want to be accepted by those around us. In all honesty no one can say that they have never done something that was probably pretty stupid to be accepted by someone else. We seek acceptance from the world rather than wholly from God.

John 17:14 states, “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” God has given us his word but the world does not like to here about it. Do we choose to just go along with everything rather than tell others what Christ has done? Do we continue acting like the world just to be accepted by those around us? Do we compromise to make things more comfortable for ourselves? Or do take a stand for Christ? How do you live your life?

Using God's Word

What is Gods word?

The Bible is, and should be, our Substance as believers. It is our spiritual food. God does not talk to belivers the same way today as he did with Abraham and Moses. He speaks to us from his word and we have to be in his word to hear what he is saying.

The Bible also should be our light. Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Have you ever been hiking in the woods at night or when it was dark, or have you ever used a flashlight in the dark? What happens if you are just shining it right in front of your feet? Can you react in time if the light is just at your feet to avoid hitting a tree? We need to shine the light ahead of us. The same is with the Bible. While it is good to read the Bible are we just using it when we want to "see right in front of us?" We need to read it constantly and let the Lord prepare us for "what is ahead" through it.

The Bible is Truth. John 17:14-20 says, "14I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

What God says in his word is undisputable it is his word and what he inspired the authors of the Bible to write. We need to live his word as evidence of this truth.
When we trust it doesnt mean to just sit around and wait for things to happen, but we must continue on in life and trust that God will do what is best for us.

The Bible is so much more than this and I could take forever and not even have you see the tip of the iceburg. I hope in my next post to continue on in talking about what the Bible is.

What Does Being a Christian Really Mean?

What does it mean to be a Christian?

In Luke 14:25-36 the Bible says,

25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Is being a Christian a social "position"? NO. When we become a Christian, Christ says to "forsake all". This doesnt mean that when you become a Christain you have to throw all of your possesions out and live in a box. We must conciuosly decide to dedicate all that we have to the Lord's service.

3 Things You Must Ask Yourself

1. Are you willing to follow Christ above all others?
2. Will you die to yourself and live for Christ?
3. Are you willing to die for your faith?

Today in America we are still blessed with religious freedom. It has been stated many times by famous speakers, ordinary people, and bloggers, about the persecution of Christians in foreign countries. Most Christians are not put into a situation were they may have to choose between their faith and their life. In Revelation it talks about being a lukewarm Christian. Christ would rather us be cold or hot but not in the middle. How do you view what Christianity is?

For those who truly follow Christ it is a joyous thing. We must daily ask oursleves these questions and seek to follow the Lord

What is Love?

What is love? I am sure if you walked up to random people on the street and asked them that question you would get some pretty strange answers. Love, is a strong affection for another rising from kinship of close personal ties. It also means to cherish and hold dear. Today the word is used so flippantly. I love that person. I love doing this or that. I love getting out of school for the summer. The Bible in John 15:13 says this, Greater LOVE hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Wow. Would you be willing to die for the things and people you love?
Next time you say, I love you, think. Would you be willing to lay down your life for that person? That is true love. 1 Corinthians 13 commonly dubbed the "Love Chapter" gives us a detailed description of what love is.

1 Corinthians 13

The Greatest Gift

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, it profits me nothing.

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Is this the kind of love that you talk about in your every day life? This is true love. This is what God intended love to be. We view love as word such as like. We can even use the two interchangelbly. I love ice cream or I like ice cream. I admit that it is a kind of lame example. Who would die for ice cream? But next time you say you love something look at the context you use it in.

God shows us an example of the love we are supposed to experience in our everyday life, in Romans 8:39 this reads; nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Wow. God loves us so much that nothing can seperate us from him. He sent his son to DIE on the cross for our sins. Jesus loved us so much he was willing to DIE and bear the pain of death because he loves us.

Finaly in 1 John 4:7 it says; Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

God does intend for us to love. He created us with that desire. Why then do we take love for granted, why do we take it lightly? Isnt it great to know that Christ love is unconditionable? There is no height or depth that compares to the love Christ has for us.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (New King James Version)

14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you[a] are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“ I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”[b]

17 Therefore

“ Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”[c]
18 “ I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the LORD Almighty.”[d]

I have heard of alot of people who talk about problems with boyfriends and girlfriends. I have to admit I am no expert in these two areas, I believe that to make the statement, "I love you" you have to mean it. Of course this brings us to the discussion of what Love is, which I hope to work on as my next post, Lord Willing. But one thing that I do know is that the best place to get advice is from God who speaks through his word, the Bible.

As a personal decision, I have decided I will not, "unequally yoke my self with the unbelievers." I do not do this because I look down on some one who isn't a Christian, but problems will arise between a follower of Christ and someone who does not believe Christ is sovereign. Problems will arise because your priorities, reasoning, sense of right and wrong are at different points. As a Christian you belong totally to God. Somone who isn't a believer doesn't share that core obligation or affection. So even if you find yourself magneticly drawn in countless other areas there is an unbridgable gap between you. If you where to hitch to different animals to a wagon and have them pull it how well do you think it would work? Would a donkey and an ox pull with the same strenght or continue with the same stanima? A modern day example might be this.(Just pretend your a kid at the playground again) If you wanted to ride a see-saw who would you chose to ride with you? Do you look for a big burly guy that looks like he could rip apart a phone book or do you chose the kid swinging next to you on the swings? Things just never seem to work out when you hang tight with somone who is pulling the opposite direction.
What will you decide? Will you take your chances? Do you want to risk heartbreak? Or will you ask God to help you find a believer to spend time with. To grow in a realtionship with but more importantly to help you to grow in a realtionship with God?

What is the Lord's Plan?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_fKZI_uma558/Ri_uZC0RnzI/AAAAAAAAAAM/-3-m7zHmK4E/s320/DSCN1393.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057523020580626226" />
As I sit here I look back over the last two weeks since I have last blogged I can't help but wonder What is the Lord's Plan. I've continued going to school and playing baseball just about everyday. I wake up each morning, have my devotions and go to school. So what is the Lord's Plan right now for me? I think over what I have been doing and realized while I have been praying, I have not been praying for the Lord's guidance. I have been praying for some friends of mine who have been going through a hard time, I've been praying for safety for my family and friends, understanding with my homework and many things like that. What I have not been praying for has been God's guidance. It ties into asking for wisdom too. When we ask the what his plan is for our life we must also ask for the wisdom to make the right choices as events unfold. I have to remember, just like we all do, to not live for the past, nor worry for the future. The past has come and gone and I must learn from what happened and better serve the Lord. I should not worry about the future either, because it is in Jesus' hands. I may not know what God's plan is for my life but I trust that if I ask him he will guide me through. It makes me think of the illustration of the footprints in the sand.

"A man walking down the "beach of life" looked back down the stretch of sand he had already traversed. At some points the man saw two sets of footprints and other times he saw one. The man turned to God and said, "Lord why are there some times where there only one set of footprints? Why did you leave me to walk alone?" The Lord replied, "Oh my son. During those times I never left you, it was during those times I carried you, and I never let go of your hand even when we walked together."

Now I realize first of all we can not converse with the Lord, but it is true. We have to ask God to carry us and never let go of our hand. I have to remember to ask the Lord to carry me and ask the what is your plan for my life?

The Call of Wisdom

Proverbs 1:20 "Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares."

Question for today: Will you seek what God's wisdom has to offer or will you chose to "love simplicity" and "delight in their scorning."(Excerpts from Proverbs 1:22) Scorning means to dimiss as contemptible or unworthy and simple means lack of thought, intelligence, wisdom or education.

Alot of people know the story of Solomon in the Bible but if you are not familiar you can find part of his story in 1 Kings. Solomon was the son of David king of Israel and his youngest son. When he became king, the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said ask for anything you want and I will give it to you. Solomon asked for wisdom.

What exactly is wisdom? Is it being smart? Being old and therefore wise? What does it mean to be wise? Wisdom is the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships. God's wisdom is the greatest. When we ask him to help us and give us wisdom and when we are in his word he promises to give us wisdom. Throughout the verses in Proverbs 1:20-33 it talks about if we accpet God's wisdom we will be blessed but of you do not accepet God's wisdom your life will be full of pain and heartache.

Here is a link to the whole verse Proverbs 1:20-33 in the New King James Version
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%201:20-33;&version=50;

Getting Started

I have always had a heart to reach out to people and let them know that Jesus their creator loves them. I started this blog with the intention to put the gospel out there and also to encourage fellow believers in their walk. I cant say I know everything or that I will always be right but I pray that Christ gives me wisdom through all of this.
